Welcome to the last part of our blog series and your journey to healthier digestion, better nutrient absorption and a lower incidence of digestive disorders.

In today’s brief post, we summarize all of these main points. here are all the major areas of your digestive health and function that the human body needs magnesium for:


1. Fueling and maintaining your digestive organs – Every digestive organ needs energy in the form of ATP molecules. Magnesium is required to make every single ATP molecule in the human body. Furthermore the daily regenerative process that maintains the physical structure of your digestive organs (called protein synthesis) is also biologically impossible without magnesium.

2. Protecting these organs from inflammation & iron toxicity – Magnesium is nature’s most powerful anti-inflammatory agent, and magnesium deficiency is linked with many inflammatory diseases. Furthermore, magnesium plays a central role in fighting oxidative stress via its role in the production of our body’s major antioxidants and by preventing iron toxicity which is a major source of oxidative stress.

3. Salivary digestion – The first phase of digestion occurs in the mouth with two aspects: chewing and the produciton of salivary digestive enzymes which begin breaking down carbohydrates. Magnesium is required for both chewing (via its role in muscular contraction and activation) and salivary enzyme production via its role in protein synthesis.

4. Stomach function and acid secretion – The second phase of digestion begins when food passes from the mouth, down the esophagus and into the stomach. The stomach’s production of acid helps to kill any bacteria that have entered along with our food. Stomach acid also works with another digestive enzyme called pepsin in order to break protein down into smaller amino acid chains. The stomach needs magnesium to make stomach acid and pepsin.

5. Pancreas function and digestive enzyme production – The third phase of digestion occurs after food leaves the stomach and enters the small intestine. At this point the pancreas produces and relesases into the intestine three kinds of digestive enzymes for carbs, proteins and fats. Your pancreas needs magnesium in order to make all these enzymes. Furthermore magnesium deficiency is linked with pnacreatitis and pancreatic cancer.

6. Intestinal function and nutrient absorption – The pancreatic enzymes enter the small intestine and break down all the fats, carbs and protein molecules into fatty acids, monosaccharides and amino acids which can then be absorbed into your bloodstream via the cell wall of the small intestine. The cells of the small intestine have the shortest life spans of all bodily cells due to high inflammation and oxidative stress, and magnesium helps maximize their lifespan and functionality by fighting both of these sources of damage.

7. Prevention of GERD, heartburn/acid reflux and stomach ulcers – G.E.R.D is occurs when the region that sepearates the stomach from the esophagus is not working properly. This region should ONLY be open when food enters the stomach. In G.E.R.D, is stays open constantly, and allows stomach acid to enter the esophagus. This is caused by pressure, inflammation and bacterial buildup in the stomach (which also causes stomach ulcers). Magnesium is critical to the 4 major factors that prevent this from happeneing, including the prevention of bacterial overgrowth in the intestine and stomach.
